Melbourne storm
NZPA-AAP Melbourne Thousands of homes were blacked out and hundreds of houses damaged on Monday night as winds of up to 130 km/h hit Melbourne during a fierce storm. A man in his 20s died when a car crashed into a pole during the height of the storm about 4 a.m. yesterday (local time) on the Warrigal Road overpass in east suburban Oakleigh. The State Electricity Commission said at least 200 substations were affected by high winds. By 8 a.m. up to 4000 homes were still without power. The state emergency service repprted about 500 calls. At least one home at Ferny Creek, east of Melbourne, was badly damaged by a falling tree and hundreds of others were damaged throughout the metropolitan area.
