Square plans supported
A second Christchurch City Council committee has recommended the finishing of the Victoria Square redevelopment as a green open space without buildings and carparks. The council’s parks and recreation committee yesterday followed the lead given by the town-plan-ning committee last week, approving stage two of the redevelopment but without the parking precinct in Armagh Street. However, both committees have left the door open in their recommendations for a stage three that could include a tea-
rooms building, canopies and archways and parking. A bid by Cr Carole Evans yesterday to have stage three — as yet not approved by the council — cancelled was ruled out of order. The parks committee’s recommendation is for the proposed exchange of land within the reserve for the car-park and toilet-tearooms be withdrawn and the proposed 21-car parking precinct previously included in stage two be deleted. All the recommendations will be debated by the council at its meeting this month.
