Softball contest

Sixteen of the top men’s club softball teams in the South Island will contest the annual Suburbs South Island -Classic which begins in Christchurch tomorrow evening. At one stage last week the Suburbs club which is running the Show Day week-end tournament was still looking for an appropriate venue. But the Christchurch City Council has given permission for Cuthberts Green to be used, with only evening games on the inside (skin)

diamonds. All seven Christchurch premier men’s teams have enteredd along with top visiting club sides such as Demons (Invercargill) Metro (Nelson), Saints (Marlborough) and Dodgers (Otago). As last year’s tournament finalists, the two South Island national league sides, United (Christchurch) and Demons, fill the first two seedings and could meet again to decide first place on Sunday afternoon.
