New frigates
Sir,—Australia is attempting to shame New Zealand into the frigate deal by suggesting that we are not facing up to our responsibilites. The facts are that, since New Zealand become nuclear-free, the United States has attempted to force us back into A.N.Z.U.S. New Zealand has been acclaimed throughout the world for resisting this pressure. The frigates are the backdoor entry to the Australian-American nuclear alliance. Australia, as confirmed by her Prime Minister, is a first-strike, nuclear target because she hosts American military bases. New Zealanders surely do not want the doubtful honour of dying for the United States? Let us maintain an independent foreign policy and show the world that there is a better way than nuclear destruction. — Yours, etc., MARGARET BLACKER. November 4, 1988.
