City development
Sir,—l recall the fuss about the siting of a police kiosk in Cathedral Square, cluttering up open space. Now the whole area is under threat from proposals which include glass-walled tearooms, a giant chess board, flagpoles and the birdman memorial. Soon there will be little room left for non-participating citizens to stroll or sit, enjoying the air. Immediately an empty space becomes available, architects and planners are in a fidget to devise something to fill it, sometimes at considerable expense. I object to being over-planned for; a few benches with trees and little else is all that is necessary. Does the present deluge of trivial ideas come from a stirring of the council’s conscience at having recently rejected the only proposal of a scale and dignity worthy of this city? — Yours, etc. W. A. SUTTON. October 6, 1988.
