Floor collapse kills worker
By
JANE DUNBAR
One man was killed and another suffered head injuries when a floor collapsed at the Canterbury Malting Company’s premises in Heathcote last evening.
The floor, which had recently been renovated, collapsed just
before 9 p.m., said the company’s production manager, Mr Colin Hall. The two men were the only ones in the area, and had just finished loading a kiln with barley. The kilning is the end of the malting process. The factory runs 24 hours a day, and the men were working
with two other on the 4 p.m. to midnight shift. Work stopped after the accident. The police, Fire Department and an ambulance went to the accident scene. A labour Department inspector of accidents was also called out to investigate. The dead man’s name was not available late last evening.
