Sport Familiar final
Just as they did last year Lancaster Park and Christchurch I will meet in the grand final of the men’s open grade inter-club squash competition on Saturday evening. Both teams had reasonably comfortable 3-1 wins in last evening’s semi-finals, dropping their only rubbers when the outcome was already decided. Burnside’s Michael Allred was rewarded for perseverance when he took Paul Viggers (Lancaster Park) to five games for the third time this season and finally came out on top, finishing off with a dead nick winner. Viggers had actually held match ball at 8-4 in the third game. While the men’s final will go ahead at the Christchurch Squash Rackets Club courts on Saturday, the scheduling of the women’s grand final is less clear-cut. The Christchurch I women's team is seeking a deferment as its top player, Jillian Oakley, will be absent in Wellington because of a family bereavement. And Sumner, beaten on a countback of games in its semi-final, intends to protest against Marist’s playing order for the match. The Christchurch I-Lan-caster Park I semi-final was marked by the open grade debij>of Sarah Cook, aged 13,
who came from two games down for a meritorious win over Karen Williams (Christchurch). Results:— Men Lancaster Park 8, Burnside 2 P. Viggers lost to M. Allred, 10-8, 9-5, 8-10, 5-9, 6-9; M.
