Ancient log find
Totara and matai logs believed to be about 3500 years old have been unearthed by excavators working on the Riccarton Business Park site in Mandeville Street. The Riccarton Borough Council’s reserves superintendent, Mr Bill Liddell, said carbon dating on logs found in the area about 38 years ago had shown they were about 3500 years old, and these logs were probably about the same
age. He attributed the condition of the logs to the peat in which they wer embedded. Some of the six to 10 logs unearthed were split but not rotten. The warm weather is aiding the drying of the old logs, which Mr Liddell hopes to saw into planks to make seats and tables for council reserves. He believed the logs were once part of extensive native bush in the area.
