Lyle to captain ‘test’ match
NZPA-AAP Brisbane The world matchplay title winner, Sandy Lyle, will be in Australia early next month to captain a Great Britain side in a sAust4so,ooo ($NZ575,190) “test” match against Australia’s leading golfers at the Mirage Country Club, Port Douglas. Lyle, who scored a 2-1 victory over Nick Faldo at Wentworth to secure the title yesterday, heads the six-strong Great Britain team to contest the threeday event from November 18.
The remaining five members of the Britain side are the Welshman lan Woosnam, Northern Ireland’s Ronan Rafferty, Howard Clark, Gordon Brand jun. and Mark James.
James replaces Faldo in the starting line-up. Faldo will forgo his commitment for a month following the Dunhill Cup, which begins on Friday, to be with his wife, who is expecting their second child.
The 30-year-old Lyle, who added the British Masters title in June to his victories in the United States Masters, Phoenix Open and Greater Greensboro Open, is now third on rankings behind Greg Norman and Seve Ballesteros and fills a similar position on the P.G.A. money winners list with earnings of $U5653,334 (8NZ1.04 million).
The Australian team comprises Norman as captain along with his Dunhill Cup team-mates Rodger Davis and David Graham, and Peter Senior, Craig Parry and Steve Elkington.
