Tests ‘must start now’
PA Auckland New Zealand’s leading 1990 Commonwealth Games competitors must be randomly tested for performance enhancing drugs between now and the Games, the chairman of the New Zealand Sport Federation anti-doping sub committee, Dr Tony Edwards, said yesterday. New Zealand should im-
mediately follow the lead of other countries leading the fight against drug taking in sport, such as in Britain. Competitors should be subject to random drug tests at any time of the year, Dr Edwards said. “Each of the 1990 Commonwealth Games sports should submit the names of their leading candi-
dates and they should then be tested at any time between now and the start of the Games. “There are doctors throughout the country who could do the testing.” Athletes in Britain must now sign a certificate agreeing random testing for drugs at any time of the year.
