Legal action over Christchurch City Council charges for taking photographs in the Botanic Gardens may' be taken by the local branch of the Professional Photographers’ Association. “Some of our members are still very hot about it, and we are looking at the possibility of taking legal action,” said the chairman of the association’s district council, Mr Hugh Perry. Some professional photographers had paid the $75 fee but others had not, he said.
They believed that by paying they were agreeing with ' the charges rather than fighting them, he said.
The charges infringed on “the rights of the public to hire us and be photographed in their park,” he said. The council’s deputy general manager (parks), Mr Rob Dally, said the council was entitled to charge professionals for taking photographs in city parks. He said he had received a letter from the association’s solicitor, and would respond to it.
