Tucker well in front of golf field
Wayne Tucker may not be the oldest golfer still competing in the Woodward Cup inter-club golf competition, but the Christchurch club player is definitely the most seasoned when it comes to the number of matches played. Tucker, whose son, Brett, is also a member of the Christchurch eightman team, reached a milestone of 175 appearances this season and he requires only two more wins to record 100 successes. Peter Neal, who started his Woodward Cup career with Avondale before switching to Coringa in 1975, returned to that team after an absence of
five years to advance his total to 125, a tally matched by the diminu-
tive but doughty Templeton player, John Prebble. After representing
Templeton in the competition for 15 successive years, Prebble dropped down a grade to the Blank Cup last year, but his form justified his return this season and he won four of his six games. Four golfers became new members of the “100 Club”. They were the Christchurch pair, Rick Vincent and Geoff Saunders, the Harewood No. 1, Mark Street, and Waimairi Beach’s durable Fred Poskitt. Milestones achieved were:— Appearances 175: Wayne Tucker (Christchurch). 125: Peter Neal (Coringa), John Prebble (Templeton).
100: Rick Vincent (Christchurch), Geoff Saunders (Christchurch), Mark Street (Harewood), Fred Poskitt (Waimairi Beach). 75: Joe Whitaker (Christchurch), Brent Paterson (Coringa). 50: Mark Elley (Central Canterbury), Martin Stanley (Coringa), Bob Bradley (Russley), Neville Brightwell (Templeton), Stephen Paterson (Waitikiri), Ross Gourley (Waimairi Beach). Wins 70: John Williamson (Christchurch). 60: Saunders, Prebble. 50: John Allin (North Canterbury). 30: David Murphy (Coringa), S. Paterson.
