Games for deaf get backing
The Christchurch City Council has underwritten the January World Games for the Deaf to a maximum of $135,000.
The deficit on the Games, to be held in Christchurch, might be between $112,000 and $260,000. The council has agreed to underwrite that deficit on a one-quarter-three-quarter arrangement with the New Zealand Government. The most this could cost the council would be $65,000. With waived rentals, the support for the Games comes to $98,000 to $135,000 from the council. The Games’ organisers have been promised $300,000 from the Lotteries Board.
The organisers have told the council they intend not to call on the underwriting funds, and to pay all or part of the venue hire if they can.
