Post-match pep

By GLEN PERKINSON in Wellington

A pre-match pep talk aimed at spurring the Kiwis to a World Cup victory may have failed, but Mr Winston Peters is making sure the knocking machine does not get the gutsy footballers down post-match. Mr Peters, the Opposition spokesman on employment and Maori affairs, hit back at those running down the national league team.

“The knockers should back off from the team and their coach, Tony

Gordon,” he said,

He called on New Zealanders to remember that the team was runner-up in the World Cup.

“To lose to an excellent Australian league team is no disgrace,” Mr Peters said. He was proud of the team and said it had made a bold effort to come back from a grim position. Rugby league had also done much to “break down race and class barriers — Sunday’s loss will not impede that.”
