International promotion for Cup week proposed
The idea of a group of Australian punters visiting Riccarton for a day on November 12 could be the beginning of a major international promotion of Cup week, according to the Canterbury Jockey Club chairman, John Austin.
"If the promotion is the success expected a package deal aimed at Asian and American markets is
a real possibility. “There is something to sell here with two days racing, two days trotting and the A. and P. Show. There are several parties interested in exploring such a promotion and it could be a big boost for both codes in the area,” Mr Austin said. The introduction of the one-day Melbourne Cup tour from Christchurch on
November 1, and the Sydney venture for the last day of the Lion Brown New Zealand Cup meeting opens up many possibilities for the future, according to Mr Austin.
“With assistance from travel and hotel interests, which is a very real possibility, racing and trotting clubs could reap a big benefit from the Cup week programme.”
