Bowling star to visit
Ten-pin bowling is an emerging sport in New Zealand, and that emergence will be accelerated by the visit to Christchurch this week of Mark Roth, the biggest money winner in the game in the United States.
With career earnings in excess of $1,300,000, Roth is a bowling superstar. His feats in the ten-pin alleys of America are legendary. Already a member of the Professional Bowlers’ Association’s Hall of Fame, Roth has bowled more than 8500 games in a 17-year career. At 37, he has won the Player and Bowler of the Year awards four times, and has won 33 P.B.A. championship events. Roth is playing in Madison bowling centres in Auckland, Wellington, Rotorua and Christchurch, to follow up ten-pin bowling’s appearance as a demonstration sport in the Olympic Games in Seoul recently.
In Christchurch Roth will play the winner of a special tournament at the Garden City Bowl on Saturday. He will also conduct coaching clinics for the higher average bowlers.
A ten-pin bowler’s moment of ecstacy is when he or she bowls a "300 game.” Mark Roth has accomplished the feat 23 times in his distinguished career.
