Edberg ends Swiss hopes

NZPA-Reuter Basle, Switzerland The top-seeded Swede, Stefan Edberg, ended hopes of a first-ever home triumph in the Basle tennis grand prix when he beat Jakob Hlasek, of Switzerland, 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 62, in the final on Sunday.

Yet the Wimbledon champion and world number three needed all his courtcraft and experience to overcome the Prague-born Swiss Davis Cup player, seeded sixth. Hlasek, bidding to become the first Swiss winner of the tournament in its 15-year history, refused to be overawed by his opponent’s ranking and reputation. The contest effectively looked over when the Lon-don-based Swede cruised through the second set with a fourth-game service break, but Hlasek hit back to keep alive his hopes of a first-ever grand prix win.

Hlasek reduced the deficit to 2-1 in sets by breaking the Swede for the first time in the eighth game to go 5-3 ahead, and held serve for the set.

Edberg, a winner in Switzerland in 1985 and 1986, shifted into top gear in the fourth set. Using his full repertoire of strokes, he held his service to love, and took the next eight points with some breathtaking textbook power tennis to go 3-0 up.
