Mobility scheme cuts
Sir, — We welcome the Minister of Social Welfare’s announcement of benefit increases to disabled people. But the Minister of Transport has cut urban transport funding to the Canterbury United Council which has, in turn, reduced the funds available for the operation of the Total Mobility Scheme. This scheme subsidises, at 50 per cent, transport for people with disabilities who cannot use conventional public transport. There is now a squeeze on organisations working with disabled people to restrict the issue of vouchers and that, in turn, squeezes disabled people. That means a lot of stress for many of our members who may not be able to go to work, shopping for groceries, hospital treatments, the doctor and support groups. Instead of accepting these cuts, we disabled should be joining together to fight for more funding. — Yours, etc., GRAEME STANLEY, Manager, Disabled Persons’ Centre. October 6, 1988.
