New frigates
Sir, —I was astounded to find that New Zealand is planning to buy four, SSOOM frigates for its navy. There is no point in New Zealand wasting its money on these frigates, which will be of no use to us at all. If there is a nuclear war then there will be no need for the frigates as we will be killed by radiation fallout or a direct blast. As for patrolling our fishing waters, two would be a maximum to add to the existing vessels. This S2B could be used in other ways such as reducing our deficit. The deficit at the moment is around the S6B mark. It could be brought down to S4B instead of rising to SBB by the purchase of these vessels. We are put on this Earth to be stewards of the wealth we are given, and look at what we have done. Absolutely nothing! — Yours, etc.,
S. A. RUNACRES. October 8, 1988.
