West Coast floods
Sir, —Following the recent floods and devastation in and around Greymouth, it is heartwarming to see the generosity of everyday folk doing their bit to help those affected in reestablishing their possessions. However, there is an apparent absence of donations or assistance from any of New Zealand’s big business conglomerates, some of whose prosperity has, no doubt, been assisted by the nature of their logging activities on the West Coast. How coincidental that we hear of the profits gained by those big companies derived in part from nature destruction, like so many multi-national companies operating in Third World countries leading to terrible human suffering. — Yours, etc.,
CHRISTINE McEVEDY. October 6, 1988.
