High Stake pleases trainer

Trainer Jim Melton said he was happy with High Stake after the highpriced colt worked at Riccarton yesterday. High Stake had disappointed with his full scale workout on Wednesday morning bringing doubts about his ability to clear maidens in his debut at Riccarton today. “He’s a colt away from home for the first time and he gawked at everything. He’s done a treat since and I’m not too worried about the gallop,” Melton said. He was not so fortunate with Regal Romp which has had to be scratched because of a stone bruise which burst too late to allow him to start today.

“He would have had to be able to gallop today to be ready to race and he was feeling the foot too much. He’ll be good as gold by Saturday,” said Melton.
