N.Z. judoka fails
PA Seoul The Rotorua judoka, Donna Guy, failed in her quest for a bronze medal in the women’s exhibition judo, losing to Japan’s Noriko Mochida in a 61kg fight-off. Guy was beaten by Great Britain’s world champion, Diane Bell, in her first round bout. However, the defeat gave her a chance to fight
for the bronze in the eight-strong field. Under judo’s repechage system fighters beaten by finalists automatically go into a fight-off to compete for two bronze medals. Guy drew Mochida and lost the bout by a koka (half point) when the Japanese successfully executed a leg throw. At the 1986 Commonwealth Games Guy defeated Bell by a koka.
