Pro-am begins today
Weedons, as has become customary, will be the venue today for the first of four pro-am golf tournaments on the Canterbury mini circuit this season. The four pro-ams are each worth 1 $5OOO with Russley holding the second tournament tomorrow, Rawhiti the third on Saturday and Templeton running the fourth on Sunday./. Although the tournaments have been reduced from previous years, the number of professionals has increased with the top four from last year’s order of merit on the new Zealand mini circuit, Mike Moynihan and Gary Parkinson (both Auckland), Craig Owen (Wanganui) and David Hartshorne (Russley), all in competition. Forty-two professionals have entered the events The Otago touring pro-' fessional, Greg Turner, while not meeting with the successes that marked his entry into the money ranks three years ago, will still be a drawcard and there are several other well-performed players, notably John Griffin (Hamilton), Gary Grut (Auckland), Geoff Clarke (Alexandra), Denis Clark (New Plymouth), and the Tasmanian George Kramer. The Christchurch-based professionals normally fare well on home courses, and Hartshorne and Mark Guy (Harewood) should collect some sizeable cheques.
