Corsicana completes smart solo gallop

By

DAVID McCARTHY

Corsicana did her chances for the Canterbury Belle Stakes at Riccarton tomorrow little harm with a smart gallop on the plough at the course yesterday. Graham Heaton directed the Half Iced filly’s final trial which resulted in Corsicana producing a solo 800 m in 49.4 s with her last 200 m coming up in 11.25. Corsicana should only have improved with her Grigg Stakes outing recently and may prove hard to beat tomorrow. If the Kerr stable were happy with that run the same could not be said of the Busuttin camp after High Stake and Coconut Ice completed their work on the inside grass which was firm. High Stake, a Sir Tristram colt which cost $600,000 as a yearling, and which hopefuly should measure up to classic class later this spring according to his connections, was rather off hand running 800 m in 58s, the closing 600 m in 42.8 s travelling fairly at the finish. High Stake has been brought south largely because the wet tracks he detests persist in Foxton, his home territory. He had pleased his connections previous to yesterday’s assignment which may not have been the best guide to his chances. Peach Melba and Wes-

sex were smart workers on the plough while Midnight Melody caught the eye finishing clear of Morning Wings over 800 m on the grass and Apello shaded Robinski in their 1200 m gallop which posted a good time. Lady Rio dropped her rider and bolted near the end of the session covering two rounds of an inside track before completing one and a half laps of the course proper. The Sir Bart mare appared to take little harm from the incident however and will run as planned tomorrow if no further ill effects appear. Plough fast Tolman and Lickofice
