Lifter breaks records
NZPA-Reuter
The heavyweight Yuri Zacharevich smashed two of his world records and won the Soviet Union its fifth weightlifting gold medal at the Olympics. He twice broke his previous world mark of 203.5 kg for the snatch, ending with 210 kg, and smashed his world total lift record with a new mark of 455 kg. In a close tussle for the other medals, Jozsef Jacso, of Hungary, won the silver with a combined lift of 427.5 and the East German Ronny Weller took the bronze with 425, edging out compatriot Michael Schubert who lifted the same weight but was heavier. Zacharevich, a 25-year-old teacher, stepped into action after the nine other contestants had finished their lift programme, then held centre stage with snatches of 195, 205 and 210. His previous record 203.5 kg was set at the European championships in Cardiff in April. Zacharevich, the world champion in the 110 kg category since 1985, clenched his teeth and held the barbell above his head for several seconds, making a nod of affirmation to the judges of his world-beating mark of 210. His first jerk of 245 gave him a world best total of 455, breaking his 452.5 set in Cardiff.
