No charges likely against swimmers
NZPA-Reuter Seoul Two United States Olympic swimmers arrested for stealing a stone lion’s head from a Seoul nightclub are unlikely to be charged, State radio said yesterday. The gold medallists, Troy Dalbey and Doug Gjertesen, members of the team that set a world record in the 4xloo metres freestyle relay, publicly apologised for the theft before being questioned by police for nearly six hours on Tuesday. Police yesterday turned over the swimmers’ case to Government prosecutors, who have yet to announce whether to
formally charge the two men. But the State-run Korea Broadcasting System (K. 8.5. quoted prosecution officials as saying they were not likely to press charges “in the light of their status as Olympic athletes and for the good of Korean-American relations.” United States Olympic officials have kicked the pair off the American team in Seoul and confined them to their quarters in the athletes’ village since the theft at the wppv.pnd In their public apology the swimmers said the theft was a drunken prank played while celebrating their Olympic victory.
