Australia barely steady

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed barely steady and off the day’s highs yesterday, in what was described as extremely dull trading. One broker said the release of the higher-than-expected August current account deficit of sAustl.39 billion failed to have an impact either way on the listless market. At the close of floor trading the all ordinaries index was just 0.5 points up at 1545.4. The gold marker finished up 13.2 points at 1624.6 and the all industrials index 2.1 at 2556.9. The all resources eased 0.5 to 787.5. National turnover was 73.65 million shares worth SAustl 45.07 million as falls led rises by about 10 to nine. Elders IXL led the few modest gains in the industrial sector as it rose 6c to 344 on the back of its strong profit result and in increased op-tion-related trade.
