By

Air New Zealand’s fares between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch were increased 12 per cent from midnight. The move comes 24 hours after Ansett New Zealand applied a 12 per cent increase on its routes. Air New Zealand last increased domestic fares in May, 1987, when the cost of a ticket from Christchurch to Auckland rose from $210.90 to $218.90. From today, the same ticket will cost $245.30. Four years ago the fare was $149. Air New Zealand has applied a far bigger increase to its surcharge for Pacific class. This will now cost $33 instead of $22, an increase of 50 per cent. A “super thrifty” fare between Christchurch and Auckland will cost $llO (previously $99). Between Christchurch and Wellington, the same class of travel will cost $63 ($57). A spokesman for the airline said fares on all other routes would remain the same, in the meantime, but added they were under review.
