Reagan plea on chemical pact

NZPA-Reuter New York President Ronald Reagan used his farewell appearance at the United Nations to press for a global conference to strengthen a , 1925 chemical arms pact.

White House aides said the President hoped the conference could be held under United Nations auspices before his Presidency ends on January 20 next year.

He also said he was lowering the profile of American forces in the Gulf, but not his Administration’s resolve to keep shipping lanes open in that key region. “The use of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq war — beyond its tragic human toll — jeopardises the moral and legal strictures that have held these weapons in check since World War I,” Mr Reagan told the formal opening of the forty-third United' Nations General Session.

“Let this tragedy spark reaffirmation of the Geneva protocol outlawing the use of chemical weapons,” he said.
