F.I.S. events cancelled
This year’s El Polio Loco women’s F.I.S. skiing events at Mt Hutt have been cancelled because of snow conditions. The events had earlier been postponed for a week, and were to have begun next Monday. But the chairman of the organising committee, Neil Harrison, said yesterday that the snow was not now of a sufficient standard to run an international race. According to Mr Harrison, there is still enough snow for recreational skiing at Mt Hutt, but not the required vertical drop for the scheduled races — a super giant slalom, a giant slalom, and a
slalom. “It is a great pity, especially considering that the Yugoslavs are still in New Zealand, at Turoa,” Mr Harrison said. “We will just have to try again,” he said. The United States women’s team was to have arrived in New Zealand next week, but was put “on hold” pending improved snow conditions at Mt Hutt. Mr Harrison said the Americans were keen to come next year. A successful men’s F.I.S. series was held at Turoa this winter, but there have been no international races at Mt Hutt since 1986.
