Candide doubtful starter at Otaki

Special correspondent Wellington The Levin trainer, Geoff Haigh, will wait until this morning before he makes a final decision about running Candide at today’s Otaki-Maori Racing Club’s meeting. Candide is one of the entrants in the $lO,OOO Gressier Stud Handicap (2000 m the first leg of the club’s T.A.B. double. Last Saturday Haigh went before the club’s judicial committee to scratch the mare when he discovered that the track was heavy. He was given permission to scratch because his mare does not handle deep ground. Any hope of a firm track for Otaki vanished when rain returned to the area on Monday. Now Haigh finds himself in a quandaiy. Yesterday the track was heavy and while the rain had vanished, a considerable amount of drying is required to improve the going. Candide is a major Melbourne spring hope. She has had two sprint races and today’s Gressier Handicap would have been an ideal first-up target over ground. Haigh is keen to run the mare. She is booked to fly to Melbourne from Auckland on Monday and if she does not start at Otaki, she could run in the $50,000 Taranaki Stakes (2000 m at New Plymouth on Saturday. Given the state of her campaign, Haigh is not that keen she should be required to tackle Bonecrusher and Classic Bay at this stage. And there is no guarantee that the ground at New Plymouth will be firm anyway. In the Gressier Candide will face the improving Gallipoli and Abit Matey. Gallipoli impressed with an excellent effort to run third in last Saturday’s Lion Brown Cup. It will be his first start beyond 1600 metres in this campaign and he should run a bold race. Abit Matey won the Waverley Cup a week ago with 54.5 kg and today he has only 51kg. That makes him a big threat. Noble Bay was a Foxton winner, while Kimberley Road was successful at Wanganui two starts back and will also be a danger. Fairfield Lad steps up to 2000 metres, a journey at which he has been sucessful, whle Atishu and Sophie’s Secret have hinted at enough form to be rated in this company. The second leg, the Americus Handicap (1600 m looks wide open with the field down to nine last night, but Shuzohra a good third last time at Hastings and Fool’s Fortune have the best form background.
