Placid Ark destroyed
NZPA-AAP Melbourne Australia’s champion sprinter, Placid Ark, was destroyed after smashing a lower-leg bone in a track gallop at Flemington yesterday. Trackman, Bernard Spain, said the five-year-old gelding was trialing over 800 m down the outside of the course proper with two other horses when he broke down badly after only 300 m. His jockey, Vaughan Sigley, pulled him up Unable to put any weight on his off foreleg, Placid Ark was placed in a horse ambulance and taken to the Werribee Veterinary Clinic. Veterinary surgeon, Alistair Mac Lean, said the horse had a sesamoid bone fracture in the off foreleg and had to be destroyed. Placid Ark, valued around sAustsoo,ooo ($627,600), was arguably the best sprinter Ausralia has seen. He had a history of leg trouble and last autumn became'the only horse to win the Lightning Stakes, Dakleigh Plate and Newmarket Handicap in one season.
