N.Z. Cup plans abandoned

Special correspondent Auckland Bernie Hackett has given up his attempt on the New Zealand Cup with Gypsy Vance and will concentrate on races close to home. Tonight at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park the horse seems a fine chance in the feature race for pacers. Gypsy Vance is a C 8 pacer and needs two wins to qualify for races such as the New Zealand Cup, but Hackett is mindful of the fact that his charge is only a five-year-old and should develop further with time. Gypsy Vance, by Vance Hanover from Vermont Gypsy, progressed through the grades quickly towards the end of last season and has continued to shine when racing against the best northern talent. Gypsy Vance’s task tonight in the Radio Pacific Handicap (2700 m is made easier by the fact that only six runners will oppose him. New Orleans, which has shaped well with a third and a second in two starts since resuming, could be hard to catch. He is a track record holder at Alexandra Park from a stand and will repeive a 10metre start from Gypsy Vance.
