Fuel cuts taxi-running costs

Using L.P.G. has resulted in significant savings for one Wellington taxi company. “Taxis are doing around 500,000 km before engines are having to be stripped for maintenance,” said Porirua Total Energy Centre manager, Mr Neil Scott.

His workshop services 70 vehicles in the Porirua fleet and he is finding that engines stripped down at half a million kilometres are showing no detectable bore wear. As a result his staff are putting the engines back together without shortblocks even being honed. Mr Scott said that a

normal rebuild for an L.P.G. engine requires only new crankshaft bearings, and at the most, standard pistons. This is saving taxi operators thousands of dollars off normal operating overheads. It is showing other benefits as well.

According to Mr Scott engine oil is doing twice the kilometres as in equivalent petrol engines, thus requiring replacement at a healthy 20,000 km. Spark plug longevity is also improved while exhaust systems are lasting virtually the entire economic life of the car.
