Self help

We are all food experts — after all, we choose something to eat at least three times a day. So the subject of food is close to our hearts in every sense of the word. The way in which we choose food has changed rapidly in the last few years. Humans respond to bigger and brighter images. What appears in the media is so appealing that messages about good nutrition and eating to improve health are, by comparison boring and unin-

teresting. The National Heart Foundation of New Zealand is at present setting up a network of Heart Health Leaders to assist people who are interested in improving their general health through good nutrition and a more active life style, to set up their own self help groups. At a time when there is great interest in “doing your own thing” — in helping yourself, rather than depending on the experts — this network of self help groups seems timely and exciting.
