The new bird

By

Frith Williams

of Darfield A long time ago there was a forest of birds. One day a new bird came and the other birds did not like her. She was too stuck-up — she was from the city. The birds called a meeting about the new bird.

The owl said, “She is taking over the whole forest.” “There is only one good thing about her. She is pretty.” They decided to vote because some wanted her to stay and some wanted her to go. Meanwhile the stuck-up bird was looking for everyone. She heard a noise from

Mr Owl’s tree. She went in without knocking, and as she entered they all said, “What are you doing here?” “I am looking for you. "The forest is on fire.” “It can’t be; we’re all in here.” “Who can have lit it?” “Me,” she said. “You will regret this,” they all said. “No I won’t. I have

packed my bag and I am going away. “See you sometime. Good-bye!!” Away she went. Mr Owl said, “What are you waiting for? “Let’s go and put that fire out.” They all rushed out of Mr Owl’s house and then stopped. “There is no fire,” Mr Owl said.

“She was just playing mean.” “It’s good she has gone,” they all said. The next day there was a new pair of birds in the forest. The owl said, “I am getting bored with this.” He moved to the city and married that stuck-up bird. They lived a very unhappy life together.
