Laser Lad wins trial
Laser Lad, an entrant for the Tegel Poultry Flying Stakes at Ashburton this Saturday, overcame a 60m handicap to win the C 3 and faster pace at the Rangiora trials on Sunday in 3:23 for the 2600 m. The C 9 pacer, sixth and ninth in two races this term at the New Brighton meeting earlier this month, scored half a length from Willem Vink (It) on Sunday, with a further half a length to Kotare Platinum (It). The leaders had the speed on from the 800 m in 58.6 and the 400 m in 29.6. Kylie’s Pride (60m) was successful in the Cl and faster trot over 2600 m in
3:28.2 from Pitcher (80m) and All (It). The leaders ran their last 800 m in 61.4 and 400 m in 30.6. Avanti indicated he has trained on since the New Brighton meeting by winning the Cl and C2 pace in 3:29.6 (last 800 m in 58.8) from Secretary and Raspe, while Ocean Ranger took out the Cl and faster mobile pace, also over 2600 m, in 3:26.5, with the last 800 m taking 60.4. Rangfurn Lad (Dominion Hanover-Miss Wren colt) beat two rivals in the 1600 m (stand) Two-Year-Old Parade in 2:12.2, quickening from the 800 m in 60.4 and from the 400 m in 29.7.
Lady Of Spades, trained by Peter Jones, took out the CO pacers’ mobile 2600 m heat in 3:24.4 (last 800 m in 61.8) from Fellaway and Bestaway, while CO heat winners over 2600 m from a stand were: So Sure (3:33.9, last 800 m in 59.5), Molina (3:30, 800 m in 61.7) and Lovely Mood (trot, 3:34.5, 800 m in 61.5). Qualifiers Peter Jones also produced the fastest 2400 m pacing qualifier in Bestoranam (3g Besta FellaBobbie Lobell), from a half-sister to the 1985 New Zealand Cup winner, Borana, which returned 3:11.8, the leaders quickening from the 800 m in
60.9. Bestoranam beat Stokesky (3:12.2) and For Or Five (3:13.1), which also qualified. Others to qualify over 2400 m were: Parvenu (3:12.1), Native Foyle (3:12.3), Shick Lady (3:12.6) and Royal May (3:14.9). . The John Vincenttrained Just The Fella (3g Son of . Afella-Tempted) took out the pacers’ mobile 2600 m qualifying heat in 3:28, the leaders running their last 400 m in 30. Depes qualified over 2400 m as a trotter in 3:20.5, beating Alias Tarn (3:20.9), which also gained his ticket.
