Impressive strike rate
The Riccarton trainer, Royden Bergerson, produced two starters for two winners at Orari yesterday. The pair, Martinet and Queen Canute, were both ridden by Grant Davison, who had four winners on the day. Martinet, a short-priced favourite after an impressive recent trials win, is raced by a syndicate formed by members of the Wairio Racing Club on lease from Wellington business magnate and breeder, Arthur Williams, for whom Bergerson was formerly private trainer. Queen Canute is raced on lease from the same owner by Mr Paul Anning, of Christchurch.
Bergerson has now trained seven winners since shifting south earlier this year. He has
leased permanent stabling at Riccarton and expects the talented Martelomeo to return to his stable shortly.
Davison’s skills were evident in all four of his wins yesterday. He has now ridden 19 winners this season, one fewer than the leading jockey, David Walsh. He brought Martinet with a brilliant late rush yesterday from a tight pocket on the rails to pull her supporters through when her cause looked a forlorn one with just 50m to go. Martinet just caught Bolt Cutter, from the Riccarton McCann-Robson stable. Queen Canute was given a nice run handy and outfinished Bewildering and Brian Hibberd narrowly. Queen Canute had to survive a protest from the third-placed Canterbury Star before her victory was confirmed.
