Stylish four-year-old debut
Special correspondent Invercargill Jasper Macfaber, showed he had recovered from a wind operation, and hinted at a profitable innings with a stylish four-year-old debut in the Corolla Pace at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. The upstanding Dunedin-owned and trained son of El Patron raced fiercely in a midfield rails pocket, but once clear in the straight he ran on to win impressively. "If he learns to relax and settle, he has the makings of a good horse,”
Jasper Macfaber’s driver, Ali Malcolmson, said. “He really tugged and pulled today, but was still sharp at the finish.”
Jasper Macfaber looked an outstanding young pacer when he beat some fine three-year-olds on the course last December. His form then fell away in five subsequent showings. After racing at Forbury Park last January, he was put aside and operated on to rectify a wind ailment He was backed down to favouritism after a smart Forbury trials success. The strong El Patron four-year-old was selected as a yearling by Derek
Jones for trainer Barry Haig, of Dunedin, and his father, Jimmy, who has represented New Zealand in rugby and rugby league. Jimmy Haig is a brother of another Otago All Black, Laurie Haig.
Mister Gaines’s courageous success in the HiLux Pace was tinged with sadness. Only two days before the win, his trainer’s father, Robert Stiven, died.
The trainer, Doug Stiven, made a fleeting visit to Ascot Park for the race and was away within minutes on the homeward trip.
