Win today will put Testament in favour for Guineas

Special correspondent Auckland Testament has the chance to confirm his winning form at Te Rapa last start when he takes on another group of three-year-olds at the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s meeting today. Testament won pretty well at Te Rapa, in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes. It was just unfortunate that the quality of his performance was lessened somewhat because of the poor runs two or three others received in the race. From five races, Testament has scored four wins and if he adds another today in the Gilbeys Gin Guineas Trial, he will become an early favourite for Ellerslie’s Winstone Guineas at Ellerslie on October 15. None of the placegetters behind Testament at Te Rapa will run in today’s race and only one of the beaten lot, Star Affair, which came sixth. The hardest for Testament to beat on recent form should be Olga’s Pal and Gamblin’ Winnie which, as fillies will both receive 2.5 kg from Testament, with his 53kg. placings, one in Wellington's Sovereign Lodge Stakes and another in the Matamata Breeders’ Stake, Olga’s Pal has often looked good. Her comeback, for second behind Kate’s Myth in the Cavanagh Stakes at Hastings on September 12 promised another lucrative season. Gamblin’ Winnie had little to spare when winning over 1200-metre event for three-year-olds at Ellerslie on September 10, the last time she raced, but the way she ran on gave her the appearance of a high quality filly, specially over a bit more ground. As a two-year-old, Gamblin’ Winnie had only three starts from which she gained a win shared with Echo Lass, and a second placing, both at Ellerslie. Chances are she will run out today’s 1400 metres better than most. Na Botto and Lofty Blomfield seem to dominate the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Alleged Dash Handicap, a C2 2200 metres. Spyglass will be an interesting runner in the second leg, the Te Puninga Handicap. Just back from a spell, she was one of last season’s better three-year-old fillies.
