Bronze guaranteed
NZPA-Reuter Seoul Miloslav Mecir, of Czechoslovakia, lined himself up a bronze medal and the chance to challenge the Olympic gold favourite, Stefan Edberg, when he won through to the semi-finals of the men’s tennis tournament yesterday. The American team' was guaranteed at least a silver and a bronze medal with the No. 2 seed, Tim Mayotte and Brad Gilbert also reaching the semifinals, where they will
face each other. Both losing semi-finalists in the tennis will win bronze. Mecir, the man Edberg has said he fears most, overcame the windy conditions which at one stage threatened to turn the centre court match into a farce to beat the Dutchman Michiel Schapers, 36, 7-6, 6-2, 6-4. Sweden’s Edberg, opening the day’s centre court programme, made a blistering start to his quarter-final against Paolo Cane, of Italy, and won, 6-1, 7-5, 6-4.
