Spanish surprised
NZPA-Reuter Seoul The United States overwhelmed Puerto Rico and Australia surprised Spain to reach the semifinals of the Olympic men’s basketball tournament yesterday. The unbeaten United States team continued its march toward another Olympic basketball gold by using its daunting defence to score a runaway 94-57 win.
Australia used a slowdown offence and the shooting of Andrew Gaze, who scored 28 points, to edge Spain 77-74 for its first victory against the Spaniards in seven meetings dating back to 1962. Tomorrow’s semi-finals will have the Americans against the winner of the Soviet Union-Brazil quar-ter-final, while Australia meets the survivor of the Yugoslavia-Canada quar-ter-final.
