‘Sun’ claims ‘overwhelming’ support for anti-Hirohito stand
NZPA AAP-AP London London’s “Sun” newspaper said its antiHirohito stand had been overwhelmingly supported by its readers. - In articles last week the “Sun” said Japan’s Emperor was “one of the biggest war criminals of all time”. One of its stories was headlined: “Hell’s Waiting For This Truly Evil Em-
peror”. The articles brought a storm of protest from Japanese Embassy officials in London. The “Sun” on Saturday published results of its own poll showing its stand had been supported by the British public. The “Sun” said it conducted a “You The Jury” telephone opinion poll asking if the paper was right in describing
Hirohito as a warmonger. The results showed 31,107 readers said “yes” and 5857 said “no”. The “Sun” said there were only two reasons for sadness over Hirohito’s impending death: that he had lived so long; and that he went unpunished for barbaric Japanese war crimes. The “Daily Star” also attacked the Emperor in an article last week, say-
ing “we cannot forgive him. Indeed, many people believe that he should have been hanged.” Most major British newspapers reported the slanging match, but only one openly condemned the “sun” and the “Daily Star” for their stand.
- The “Daily Mirror” described their attacks on Emperor Hirohito as shameful.
