Educator warns of need for change

By PAMELA MORTON Learning institutions need to shift away from traditional teaching methods to meet the change to an "informa-tion-solar age,” according to an American educator, Dr Phil Gang. An exponent of the Montessori teaching method, Dr Gang believes the next 25 years will be crucial and that education will play an important part.

“I believe that we’re on the brink of a new awakening on this planet If we don’t awaken then the handwriting is on the wall.”

Dr Gang said using the Montessori method enabled a child to understand what was going on and how they could help themselves. “Children are our investment in the future,” he said. The Montessori method was developed by an Italian, Dr Maria Montessori, in 1907. It is aimed at children aged from three to 12 and caters for the psychological needs of the child at different levels of development. In recent years it has been extended to include secondary school pupils. Dr Gang, a consultant for Montessori schools in the United States and Europe, is in New Zealand to conduct a series of seminars on a holistic approach to education. He will hold a seminar at the Christchurch Teachers College this evening at 7.30 p.m.
