Diabetes fellowship
A $35,000 diabetes research fellowship has been awarded to Dr Kathleen Hopkins, of Auckland. ■■■■ ■ The fellowship, awarded by the AMP life insurance company, will be used by Dr Hopkins to look at the links between
hypertension and diabetes. Dr Hopkins said diabetics were subjected to increased risk of high blood pressure. "Diabetes can also lead to complications such as heart attacks, kidney failure, strokes and blindness,
but we don’t really understand the links between diabetes and associated diseases.” Diabetes affected 4 per cent of New Zealanders but was particularly prevalent among Maoris and Polynesians, she said.
