Humane society bravery awards

Several awards for bravery were announced by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand in Christchurch A silver meaal was awarded to Mark Christopher Greig, aged 18, of Picton, for a mountain rescue of a friend. A bronze medal went to Constable Lewis Robert Warner, aged 26, of Hamilton, for rescuing two prisoners from a fire in their cells. Peter James Foster, aged 20, of Fernside, and Mark Ainsley Ward, aged 20, of Ohoka, were awarded certificates of merit for a fire rescue. Certificates of merit

also went to Constable Gordon Hughey, aged 31, of Christchurch; Christopher John Gladstone, aged 32, of Wellington; and Peter Adams, in his mid-30s, of Tauranga. Constable Hughey rescued a drowning person, Mr Gladstone rescued a woman who fell off a wharf, and Mr Adams rescued two teen-age boys in Tauranga Harbour during Cyclone Bola. The resignation of one of the society’s longestserving directors, Mr Anthony Cottrell, was accepted at the meeting. Mr Cottrell is a past-president of the society and was a director for 51 years.
