Tobin scores fifth win
A new course and a new championship distance of 15km instead of the traditional metric 10 miles (16km) made no difference to Chris Tobin (Timaru) as he scored his fifth successive win in the Canterbury road running senior men’s championship in Christchurch on Saturday. Tobin ran with last year’s runner-up, Don Greig (New Brighton), for the first quarter of the four-lap course in St Martins before moving away to run on his own in the lead and finish 24s ahead of Greig. Grant McEwen (New Brighton) got the better of veteran, Eddie Gray . (Greymouth), after running with him most of the way and finished only 13s behind Greig. Mary O’Connor (University) won the senior women’s championship over 10km for the 10th time in eleven years. She led from the start and was never challenged. Prue Taylor (University) was a good second in a time of 36min, which would have put her nearly three minutes ahead of the best veteran women if she had opted to run in their race, for which she is eligible. Colleen Bardsley (Sumner) and Georgina Talbot (United) finished third and sixth, illustrating the depth of talent among veteran women in Christchurch. Talbot passed both Debbie Nelson (New Brighton) and Mifuyu Komatsu (University) on the last lap of three to take sixth place. Dave Rowell (University) won the veteran men’s race over 12km, heading off Christchurch’s Bill Kennedy by just six seconds, while Helen Grant (Sumner) took an early lead in the veteran women’s 10km championship and stayed there, with Marie Stokes (Sumner) shadowing Colleen Martin, for most of the race and outfinishing her for second.
