Crime, violence

Sir, —New Zealand has much to offer and to achieve. The bulk of her citizens are heading in the right direction and feel a sense of achievement and look forward to the future. This direction loses its attractiveness when one views the state of lawlessness that is evident amongst the minority in this great country. To be specific, with three police shot or wounded on Thursday, gangs that are permitted to exist, let alone gain publicity, racial tension and murder, arson on the East Cape, burglary and illicit drugs, the country’s resources are being sadly wasted. While I cannot suggest a solution other than to appeal to the public conscience to band together in a joint and several manner to rid us of this plague, I do call on the country’s leaders .to, once and for all, clean the nation up, irrespective of the severity of the measures required.—Yours, etc., S. C. COHEN. September 22,1988.
