Population loss a ‘scandal’
Wellington reporter Since the Labour Government came to power a net population loss of 67,000 people has occurred, the Opposition says. National’s spokesman on labour and immigration, Mr Bill Birch, said it was a scandal that many of those people leaving New Zealand permanently in the last four years were skilled workers who New Zealand could ill afford to lose. It was because of the lack of opportunity, increased racial tensions and ever-growing unemployment that these people were deserting New Zealand, he said. It was ironic that the influx of Pacific Islanders through the “aborted visafree scheme actually disguises the true extent of the total losses through emigration,” Mr Birch said.
