Bush turns to foreign affairs
NZPA-Reuter Washington The Republican Presidential candidate, George Bush, turning to foreign affairs after a clash with Democrat Michael Dukakis on crime, says Mr Dukakis would abdicate leadership of the Western alliance. “He does not, I believe, see America as the leader of the West," Mr Bush said in Houston, Texas, on Thursday. “And yet I know that if America does not lead the free world, the free world will not have a leader.” Mr Bush made the attack after a battle with Mr Dukakis earlier over crime. The Vice-President earlier went to Mr Dukakis’s home city of Boston to collect the endorsement of the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association, which always backs Republican candidates. Mr Bush renewed his campaign charge that Mr Dukakis coddled criminals by approving a prison furlough plan that allowed a convicted murderer Willie Horton to rape a woman while on release. Mr Dukakis, dropping his usual emotionless manner, lashed back and accused Mr Bush of distorting the record on crime as well as other issues including ethics in government
